THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES OF SMS, CHAT AND EMAIL LANGUAGE

Sms (Short messaging Service) , email and chat is kind of service that is used by almost all people in this world to communicate each other. This service is mostly popular among teenagers and adult. Sms, email and chat has become apart of their life. They are all used all this service to make them easier to communicate with other people not just in our country but also people from around the world. However, there are a certain parts of them which have the differences and similarities in terms of their language.

In terms of differences among them is about the formality of the language using. As in the email language, I found that the language is much more formal compared to sms and hat language since sms and chat only used our daily spoken language to communicate and it is informal language. While in the email, we can attach file that is important and contain a formal language to send to other people. The other feature that might be different among them is in terms of the length of the language. We can see that the sms, and chat language is shorter than email language. This is because of the limited space that has provided in chat and sms. Beside that, email language that is used in email language is tending to speech or writing make different with chat and sms. Chat and sms used kind of dialogue to communicate each other since they are synchronous while which occur in the real time unlike the email which is asynchronous.

The similarities among them are about the language. Mostly when we sms, email or chat, we will found that most of them used a mixed of languages and sometimes have a code switching from a language to the other language. For example, they tend to used Malay language and then suddenly switch it to English language and vice versa. The other similarity that we will found in the sms, email and chat language is in terms of short forms that they are using. Most people used a lot of short forms during they wrote a sms, email or chat with other people. Generally, the user of them is teenagers, so that they tend to write faster and it’s easier for them to write it in short form. Also they tend to create new words that sometimes it’s hard to understand by other people. The other aspect that makes them similar each other is in terms of grammar which is peoples that used this kind of communications sometimes are not really care with grammar that they used. We can find the grammatical mistakes that they write in their language. For me, this is because some of the user is not really use with grammar and always used their spoken language daily. Beside, they always write faster and sometimes do not notice about the mistake that they have done.

As a conclusions, whatever the differences and similarities among them, we should not misused of our language but used it properly in our life in whatever things that we do...
